Matanzas High School student attacks teacher's aide, accuses her of taking Nintendo Switch

UPDATE: Joan Naydich, the teacher's aide attacked, has disputed the account and says she never took the student's Nintendo Switch. The student, who had three previous battery charges, is being charged with a first-degree felony.

A security video showed a Matanzas High School student knocking a teaching assistant to the floor and then beating her as she lay unconscious and defenseless, according to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office and the video.

The 17-year-old student was charged with felony aggravated battery with bodily harm; he was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility and later turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The News-Journal has asked the State Attorney’s Office for an update on the case.

Flagler County School District Spokesman Jason Wheeler wrote in an email on Friday that out of respect for their employees, the district does not provide updates on medical conditions.

The sheriff’s office said the woman was a paraprofessional for the district. Wheeler wrote that a paraprofessional in Flagler Schools “is assigned to students with an individualized education plan.”

The student attacked the woman over a video game, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The student stated that he was upset because the victim took his Nintendo Switch away from him during class,” according to the release.

The student was described as 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing 270 pounds, according to the release.

School surveillance video shows the student walking fast toward the woman who apparently hears something and turns around. The video shows the person identified as a student knocking the assistant off her feet and into the air. The woman lands on the floor and is still.

The student kicks her as she is still on the floor. She remains motionless as the student kneels down next to her and repeatedly punches her in the back and in the head, according to the video.

Adults arrive and try to pull the student off of the assistant. The student stomps on her after he is initially separated from her, according to the video.

A deputy’s body camera video shows the handcuffed student being led out of the school. As he walks by where the woman is being treated, the student tried to spit toward her and said he would kill her when he returned, according to the charging affidavit.

In the video the student is heard yelling “Stupid (expletive). I’m going to (expletive) kill you.”
