Investigators have identified the body of a teen who was found underneath sand near Lake Merced in San Francisco in 1976. San Francisco police identified the girl as Judy Gifford. She was 14 when she died. During the 43-year investigation, police found a missing persons report made two years ago regarding Gifford's disappearance. The report was filed in the same time frame as the 1976 homicide. Police learned Gifford had a paternal aunt living in New Jersey. Officers contacted police there, who were able to get photos and dental records for Gifford and DNA from the aunt. One of the photos showed Gifford wearing an owl pendant necklace, that matched jewelry found on the victim. Last month, detectives notified Gifford's aunt about the positive identification. The homicide case remains an active investigation by San Francisco police.
