Steven Spielberg Has Made Nearly $40 Million Off Star Wars Because of a Bet

Steven Spielberg did not direct or write "Star Wars," but made nearly $40 million dollars off the movie because of an unusual bet with George Lucas. When Spielberg was working on "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and George Lucas was making "Star Wars," both released in 1977, they thought their own movie would not do as well as the other. Betting against their own films, they agreed that the director of the more successful film would give the other man 2.5 percent of their profits. "Star Wars" obviously won, and Lucas stayed true to the bet. Jeremy Parsons reports for the KTLA 5 Morning News on Friday, March 28, 2014.
