Syrian Refugees Recount Journey to Lesbos

Syrian refugees described their journey to the Greek island of Lesbos, where, on arrival, they were taken to the Kara Tepe transit camp.

“Whatever the situation is in Greece, it’s better than in Syria. Because in Syria there’s no safety and no peace, we saw with our eyes people get killed every day”, one refugee said.

More than 1,000 refugees arrive daily in the Greek Islands, according to the International Rescue Committee.

According to the UNHCR 124,000 refugees and migrants had arrived in Greece by sea at the end of July 2015. Numbers increased dramatically in July when 50,000 new arrivals were reported, 20,000 more than the previous month. The migrants mainly arrive on the islands of Lesbos, Chios, Kos, Samos and Leros.
