WESTLAND – Ashton Viers was a starter last season for Dundee’s state championship wrestling team.

He finished one win shy of being All-State individually.

But the Vikings are better in the lower weights this season. It has been difficult for Viers to get in the lineup.

So, when Viers got a chance to get on the mat for Wednesday’s Division 3 Regional at Lutheran Westland, he leapt at the opportunity – even if it meant jumping up two weight classes.

Moving from 113 points to 126 didn’t seem to bother Viers.

He won twice to help his team breeze to its 31st consecutive Regional championship.

“He would start for the majority of the teams in the state,” said Garrett Stevens, who coaches Dundee along with Nate Hall. “He’s still top 16 (at his weight class) in our division. We’re limited as to how many kids we can use.”

It took Dundee about 15 minutes to dispatch of Romulus 83-0 in the Regional semifinals.

Then they cruised past Lutheran Westland 68-9 in the finals.

“We looked good,” Hall said. “The kids wrestled hard. We got to rotate some people into the lineup.”

The Vikings got wins from 16 different wrestlers.

“We try to get a lot of guys in,” Hall said.

Bryan Sterling (106), Braden Broderick (120), Cam Chinavare (138), Blake Cosby (144), Trey Parker (150), Kole Katschor (157), Aiden Davis (165), Jacob Fenbert (175), and Aiden Massingill (215) joined Viers in winning both of their matches.

Dundee will take a 16-2 record to Kalamazoo for the state quarterfinals on Feb. 24.
