Vietnam Era Veteran Recognition Event honors 95 Dallas County veterans

The Vietnam Era Veteran Recognition Event was held Saturday, March 25 at the Veteran Reception Center in Van Meter. March marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War. Approximately 95 veterans were honored with 170 total attendance.

This event was sponsored by the Dallas County Office of Veterans Affairs, Minburn American Legion Post 99 and Minburn American Legion Auxiliary.

The guest speaker was Ann Spencer, widow of Larry Spencer, a native of Earlham, who passed away last year. Larry was Iowa's longest held POW in Vietnam. Mrs. Spencer told how her husband survived this almost seven year horror and the impact he had speaking to groups, high schools and others.

Door prizes were donated by: Fleet Farm of Waukee, Kum & Go, Caseys, and Kwik Star all of De Soto, Drifters Bar & Grille of Bouton, Casa Oaxaca Mexican Grill of Minburn, Whistlin' Donkey Sports Bar and Grill of Woodward, and Gary Sacker and Stan Merrill. TMC Transportation sponsored the continental breakfast.
