Someone recently asked me what farm shows I had coming up. I gave them a blank stare as I realized there were too many to keep track of, although a big one always stands out: the Farm Progress Show.

This year’s event will not be held in Illinois but rather Boone, Iowa, as the show rotates between there and Decatur. The future of agriculture will be on display Aug. 30 through Sept. 1. Visitors should put the New Holland booth on their must-see list as the company will feature new products and ideas in sustainability. Raven will have the “Path to Autonomy,” which is a journey to more productivity through the implementation of technology.

Iowa’s Soybean Association will cover farmer-focused research, timely information and policy initiatives to help growers flourish. The association is driven to deliver increased soybean demand, funded by the Soybean Checkoff.

Visit the Farm Progress Show official website to reserve a golf cart. Attendees may also choose to bring their own, but passes must be purchased at the main gate and are $80. No motorized vehicles are allowed, which means ATVs, UTVs or anything that idles on its own is not permitted.

There are plenty of lodging options nearby as you can look up hotels and camping spots, so book early for the best rates. Follow the Farm Progress Show on Facebook and Twitter to stay updated on exciting updates before, during and after the nation’s largest outdoor farm show. Those signing-up for mobile alerts will be entered to win $500.

Platinum sponsors for this year’s show include Grinnell Mutual and Syngenta. Learn more at www.FarmProgressShow.com.

Before we get to the Farm Progress Show, we have several local fairs to attend and cover, such as the ones in Livingston and McLean counties along with the Illinois State Fair in Springfield and our hometown Fairbury Fair. Mark your calendar now for the Labor Day weekend tradition of the Threshermen’s Reunion north of Pontiac.

We attended Historic Farm Days at Penfield last week. After a few years away from this show, it was great to be back and see everyone on the grounds. Our kids always love Penfield because of all the farm toy trailers. The food isn’t bad either!
