Viewers baffled – and furious – over 'new Coronation Street' theme made for John Lewis ad premiere
ITV viewers were left completely baffled yesterday after a host of its most high-profile shows suddenly boasted new theme tunes.
The Chase, Emmerdale and Coronation Street all featured new versions of their themes played on the piano.
Turns out it was a stunt to usher in the new John Lewis advert, which premiered last night on the channel, and which stars Elton John playing his classic piano-led anthem Your Song.
The channel’s continuity announcers teased that all would be revealed later – as did Phillip Schofield on This Morning yesterday – but those viewers who didn’t get the memo were completely confounded.
Has #CoronationStreet changed their theme tune? #bringtheoldoneback

#emmerdale #coronationstreet themes. Why are they being played by a pianist today? Any ideas anyone, already checked if Richard Clayderman has died.He hasn't! Sorry Mr Clayderman!

Never heard anything as abysmal as the new Coronation Street theme song

It looks like they've got the same Poundland Casio keyboard playing the Corry theme music, that murdered The Chase theme music. It's terrible.
Plinky-plonky-plinky-plonky.
Is this permanent ?
I hope not.— Al the Wolf (@AlanSla90124663) November 14, 2018

The ad, entitled The Boy and The Piano, traces the singer’s life back to the Christmas morning on which he was given his first piano (the rest being history) was the retailer’s much-anticipated ad for the festive period.
Elton himself has hailed the ad a success, taking to his Instagram page:
