Imagine for a moment being a very Christian, rich incumbent Republican governor running for re-election in a state full of Christian Republican voters. Pity the man that has all that and is afraid to face voters without the endorsement of a former president that lies about his election loss and then commits the most heinous act for an American politician — attempting to overthrow our duly elected government.

For some reason, Gov. Kevin Stitt does not want to talk about the promises he made to buy that stamp of approval from Donald Trump. Stitt and other politicians have been going to Trump’s Florida club for rich white people and “renting” the facility for fundraisers, funneling money to President Pay-to-Play. The fact is in Trump country, Stitt can’t keep the Trump endorsement unless he’s willing to support Trump’s un-American lie.

For politicians not too concerned about the truth or good character, running as a Trumper and parroting the former president’s big lie is foundational to their campaigns. It is also absolutely fair and necessary to question the motivation, integrity and reasoning skills of office aspirants Congressman Markwayne Mullin, Nathan Dahm and John Bennett, T.W. Shannon, Jackson Lahmeyer and a host of others who should know better, and all of whom support the former president and his enormously damaging attack on our democracy. Christian adherence to truth telling seems missing. Their campaigns are despicable.

Clearly you can love some of what Trump said and did. His good accomplishments are commendable. You can still like him as a person or as a leader. However, that support for Trump must stop once he attempted a coup and sent a violent mob to attack our Capitol. What Trump did was unconstitutional and illegal.

Now what are we to think of Stitt, who actively sought Trump’s endorsement? Stitt speaks of surrounding himself with people of high character, but we know Trump is a man of the lowest character. Even Christians who are proud of the three Supreme Court judges Trump delivered know that the man is a lifetime offender of the last four commandments. As much as Trump hates how the media and our courts try to hold him accountable, does anyone believe that he would not turn against pastors and churches that dare question him?

When Stitt campaigns as a freedom-loving man of “high character,” remember he is afraid to say the former president is lying to Oklahomans about the 2020 election. Real Christian fighters are not afraid to tell the truth no matter the cost. If he will not be honest and speak that simple truth, then what else is he hiding from us?
