Vigil held on 80th anniversary of deadly Cocoanut Grove fire that killed 492 people
An 80th anniversary vigil was held on Monday afternoon to honor the victims of the Cocoanut Grove fire, the deadliest night club blaze ever that killed 492 people.
The vigil was held at 17 Piedmont St. in downtown Boston, which had been the main entrance of the popular nightclub that went up in flames on Nov. 28, 1942.
The rapidly-spreading fire was fueled by paper decorations inside. According to accounts, the fire started when a 16-year-old bus boy lit a match while trying to replace a light bulb in the basement of the club. They also detail how frantic people tried to run out, only to get stuck at the exits.
The transcripts were published online by the Boston Public Library a decade ago.
