Vigil's Suranne Jones shares what draws her to playing queer characters

Vigil star Suranne Jones has talked about what draws her to playing queer characters, ahead of the upcoming second series.
Jones plays DCI Amy Silva in the popular show, who is in a relationship with Rose Leslie's character DS Kirsten Longacre, with the pair expecting a baby in the new series.
In a Q&A with Digital Spy and other media, Jones was asked about what attracts her to playing these queer roles, including in Vigil and in Sally Wainwright’s Gentleman Jack.

"I think you're drawn to the role, you're drawn to the character, you're drawn to what the person can give you or what you can give to the person," she said. "And through Gentleman Jack, I found a community that was so open and wonderful and receptive, and willing to share their experiences with me.
"I was like, wow, if this can be another part of a job, that you can really connect on a whole other level. So I think by doing that particular job, and then this one, I have been very welcomed as an ally and I take it very seriously."
Jones' co-star Leslie agreed with this sentiment and shared that this representation is as important off-screen as it is on-screen.

"Suranne and I wanted to make sure that within the writers room there was an LGBTQ+ writer within that room as well," she said. "And just so that we were able to get across the relationship that we have, that they are two people in love and their sexuality in no way defines who they are."
The big change to the next instalment of the BBC One procedural drama is that the action won't take place on a submarine this time – with DCI Silva instead investigating the world of drone warfare after multiple mysterious murders take place at a Scottish military base.
There is not long to wait for the highly anticipated new series, with the show returning to BBC One on Sunday, December 10 at 9pm, with the first three episodes released on BBC iPlayer earlier that day at 6am.
Series 2 of Vigil begins December 10 on BBC One, while series 1 is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
