Vigo Library chooses 'The Martian' for 2024 Community Read

Oct. 16—Andy Weir's bestseller "The Martian" has been selected the 2024 Wabash Valley Community Read by the Vigo County Public Library in a gesture that will tie in with the April 2024 solar eclipse.

The science-fiction novel about an astronaut stranded alone on the planet was selected by a library committee.

The book was adapted into a popular 2015 movie starring Matt Damon.

Careful consideration went into selecting the community read. Its space theme is considered the perfect tie-in to a major phenomenon taking place next year.

Terre Haute will be in the path of totality for the 2024 eclipse. Vigo County organizations are already hard at work planning a variety of activities that will all be a part of "Total Eclipse of the Haute." The library is planning supplementary activities to help support those efforts and will release upcoming details about programming that will enhance the community read experience.

The Wabash Valley Community Read will begin on March 1, 2024, when the library will hand out about 3,000 copies of The Martian to a variety of local agencies and organizations. The mission of this read is to foster curiosity, the love of reading and a sense of community.

Members of the committee say they chose this book because it reminds people that even in the darkest of times, humans have the power to adapt, overcome and thrive.
