Vikes add Blue Chip win

Feb. 7—MONTGOMERY — A Tuesday night win over Northeast Dubois (10-8) moved the Vikings to their 11th win of the season. That might not seem note-worthy on its own, but pretty impressive, when it was the 48th straight season B-R (11-8) has hit that number.

B-R had just three treys and was 5-15 from the free throw line, but got nine points each Braydon Knepp and Evan Wehmeier to lead the offense to the 38-29 win. Donnie Miller also had seven, while Seth Wagler and Kendall Graber combined for 11. Nick Kavanaugh rounded out the scoring two points in the low-scoring victory.

"I was pleased with Evan tonight. I thought he backed down a little at Jasper last week, but he really played well tonight. I didn't think we played poorly defensively tonight and we made some changes at halftime that really helped. It's games like this that help us know where we have to get better," said B-R coach Josh Thompson.

The Jeeps rolled out to a 5-0 lead, but Miller and Wehmeier pulled the Vikes back to within one. Knepp gave the Vikes their first lead, but NED cut it to one point with less than a minute to play in the quarter, which is how the quarter would end, 8-7.

NED wrestled the lead back, but Nick Kavanaugh came off the bench for a put back to make it 10-9. Knepp then had five unanswered points to make it 15-9. Wehmeier added the next four, but NED went on a 5-0 run of its own before Wagler had the last bucket of the half to give the Vikes a 21-16 lead with 16 minutes left to play.

The Jeeps opened the second half with a pair of treys and retook the lead. B-R went over 4:00 without scoring, but Wehmeier and Graber helped the Vikes back to a 26-24 lead. A three from Miller made it 30-24, but NED added a free throw to cut it to 30-25 at the end of the third quarter.

B-R waited nearly 3:00 to score, but Wagler made it 32-29 to hold back the Jeeps. Knepp added a bucket and Wehmeier added a free throw to make 35-29. Wehmeier came up with a big rebound that lead to a Wagler free throw and a 38-29 win.

NED was led by Colby Lockhart with nine and Grant Gollar with seven.

The Vikings (16-2) won the JV game on a last second 3-pointer from Ethan Stoll. The Vikes were led by Isaac Madison and Stoll with 12 each. Alec Wagler added six, Alex Wagler had three, Landon Miller had two and Nick Kavanaugh had one.

The Vikings host South Knox on Friday, followed by Vincennes Rivet the following Friday.
