Vikings to add depth at cornerback with signing of Kalon Barnes off Miami’s practice squad

The Vikings will add depth at cornerback with the signing of speedy Kalon Barnes off Miami’s practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Barnes was taken by Carolina in the seventh round out of Baylor in last April’s draft. He was waived by the Panthers just before the season and then joined the Dolphins’ practice squad.

Barnes was notified Tuesday morning that the Vikings wanted to sign him, and he flew to Minnesota on Tuesday night. He was scheduled to take a physical on Wednesday morning and then practice in the afternoon with the Vikings.

Barnes ran the 100-meter dash in 10.04 seconds in 2018 and this year ran the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine in 4.23 seconds. That was the second-fastest time at the combine since 2003.

Barnes will provide depth with the Vikings’ injuries at cornerback. Rookie Andrew Booth Jr. is out for the season with a knee injury, and rookie Akayleb Evans remains on injured reserve with a concussion.

The Vikings had elevated cornerback Tay Gowan from the practice squad for three recent games, but he is now out of elevations.
