Vikings, Cougars win tennis titles
May 19—Both Barr-Reeve and North Daviess added sectional tennis wins on Thursday in Loogootee and Linton. Both teams will now advance to the Jasper Regional next week, with ND playing Jasper and B-R facing South Knox.
The Vikings were 3-2 winners for coach Tim Swartzentruber in Loogootee.
LHS took the top two singles spots, as Kieragen Napier defeated Viking Brylee Fuhrman, 6-1, 6-1, and Caitlin Carrico defeated B-R's Beth Graber, 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Viking wins came from Brynlee Rollins at No. 3 singles, who defeated Ana Toy, 6-4, 6-0, while the No. 1 doubles team of Dylan DeCoursey/Sydney Swartzentruber, beat Macy Knepp/Addy Lengacher, 6-2, 6-0 and Claire Harrison/Alli Robinson, beat Abbey Fischer/Marley McAtee of LHS, 6-2, 6-0. The Lions ended its season at 13-8 and Napier (15-4, 2-0) will advance in the Individual Tournament.
"Barr-Reeve has a good team and played a good match. We didn't lose this one, Barr-Reeve won it," said LHS coach Mike Tippery.
At Linton, North Daviess added a 3-2 win over Bloomfield, for their second-ever girls, tennis title and first for coach Lindsay Secrest, with the first coming in 2003 under coach Tony Steele. at 17-6, ND also set a school record for wins.
At No. 1 and 2, ND fell as Reagan Knepp lost 2 and 2, while Amaya McBride lost 1 and 1, but with the match tied up at 2-all, senior Emma Sargent playing in the No. 3 singles spot rallied from down 1-5 in second set to take the match and clinch the sectional, 6-4 and 7-5.
ND also took both doubles spots, as Elaina Morgan and Gracelyn Byrer won 6-1 and 6-3, and No. 2's Meah Dalrymple and Bella Laughlin, 6-2 and 6-0.
