German police, tax investigators, and customs agents conducted a raid at the villa of a Russian oligarch believed to be Alisher Usmanov on Oct. 5. The villa is located in the municipality of Rottach-Egern in Bavaria, on the shores of the resort lake Tegernsee in the Alps.

Photographs from the scene of the searches show that many luxury cars of German origin were seized. Representatives of the Central Sanctions Enforcement Office stated that searches were also conducted at other real estate properties belonging to Usmanov.

Officials refused to disclose the name of the Russian individual, stating only that he is subject to EU sanctions and asset freezes. Reuters reported that the individual is Usmanov, whose representative responded that "there are no grounds for suspicion against him."

Usmanov is considered close to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, his assets in the EU were frozen, and an investigation into possible money laundering is ongoing.
