Vince & Joe's Gourmet Market in Macomb County celebrating 4 decades in business

Family-owned and operated Vince & Joe’s Gourmet Market in Macomb County is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its original store in Clinton Township. The celebration features weeklong events that also include its Shelby Township location.

Starting Wednesday, both stores kick off the anniversary celebration that runs through Tuesday with a host of events. Food sampling takes place at various times each day from many local vendors. There will be demonstrations, entertainment, and extra special pricing (released on its website on Wednesday) for customers beyond regular weekly specials. Daily events include a pasta day, baked goods day, pizza day, Michigan Apple Harvest Day, and soup and chili day.

At 10 a.m. Friday, the Clinton Township store will have a re-grand opening and ribbon-cutting event. The event features a performance by the Chippewa Valley drumline and members of the marching band and color guard, along with speeches from local officials and by members of the Vitale family, the market owners and operators.

Vince & Joe’s Clinton Township store at 41790 Garfield Road, which originally opened in 1983, recently underwent a second renovation and remodel. The new renovation and updates included adding a brick oven pizzeria (there is already one at the Shelby Township store) where you can sit and enjoy pizza or order to take home.

Its full-service bakery, which offers house-made items like fresh-baked bread, desserts, and pasta, also was expanded and remodeled along with its façade.

Owned by Vince and Mimma Vitale and Joe and Maria Vitale, Vince & Joe’s first store opened on Nov. 28, 1983, in Clinton Township on Garfield. The store was the idea of Mimma Vitale, according to a news release, whose grandfather and uncle owned Manzella’s Fruit Market in St. Clair Shores, so she was familiar with what it took to run a produce market.

Over more than a decade, the market grew, expanded its product line, and added more departments, according to a YouTube video highlighting its 40th anniversary and store highlights.

By the late '90s, its flagship Clinton Township store, now a 45,000-square-foot store at 41700 Garfield, underwent a renovation, adding more products, prepared foods, and catering.

It was 2006 when Vince & Joe’s expanded again, adding a 65,000-square-foot Shelby Township store at 55178 Van Dyke Ave.

Between both Vince & Joe’s Gourmet Market stores, about 400 people are employed. Through both stores, Vince & Joe's also gives back to the community through several donations to charitable organizations. The stores are home to fresh produce, hand-cut grass-fed and organic meats, poultry, seafood, a full deli, imported and specialty cheeses, and many other items.
