Vineland firm NDS Technologies taking lease on new site as business grows

VINELAND — Growing demand for specialized scientific glassware is pushing NDS Technologies Inc. to relocate some existing operations here to a leased facility at 1560 North Main Road, between Wheat and Oak roads.

City zoning officials recently approved a use variance for NDS to take over the roughly 10,400-square-foot building. The building, now vacant, is in a business district.

NDS was founded in Vineland in 1990 and operated first from a 6,000-square-foot property at 3823 North Mill Road in April. The property was sold in April to Chemglass Realty, but NDS still is using it on a short-term basis.

NDS also operates from a 15,000-square-foot building at 891 East Oak Road, situated behind The Daily Journal building. It is staying at the site but space there also is tight, President Norman Neill testified.

Neill, also a partner in the company, testified the increase in business is for specialized types of equipment. The products are small and have applications that can range from spectrometers to night vision goggles, he said.

“That’s why we isolate from our normal facility,” Neill said. “Because it’s very high-end, glass-to-metal seals that wind up going into very high vacuum systems. ... So, the cleanliness and control of the environment are pretty critical to us.”

Additionally, he said, NDS has clients for whom it does repackaging and shipping. The warehouse area at the new building can handle those jobs, he said.

“We get large particular boxes,” Neill said. “We break them down to smaller parts and ship them. And 99 percent of the shipments we make are LTL (Less Than Truckload). So, we don’t do any big work.”
