Want to do something for a child that will pay dividends as another school year gets under way?

Consider volunteering for the Books For Kids Promoting Literacy program.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch, which donates thousands of books to underserved schools in Manatee and Sarasota Counties, there are two programs volunteers may choose from: a weekly kindergarten program or a monthly program with first-, second- and third-graders.

Both are designed to improve reading comprehension and instill a love of reading in young learners.

Interested? Call 845-304-5793 or 845-304-5746 for details.

• Speaking of the new school year, good luck to all the folks starting it in new administrative positions around the Manatee School District.

Among them are Dr. Laurie Breslin, executive director of Curriculum and Professional Learning; Terra Brown, assistant director of Human Resources – New Teacher Development; Dr. Stephanie Callaway, executive director of Elementary Education; Omar Edwards, associate director of Strategic Initiatives; Shannon Fleming, director of Secondary Curriculum; Dr. Melinda Lundy, assistant director of Human Resources – Recruitment and Retention; Maribeth Mason, associate director of Exceptional Student Education; Wendy Mungillo, chief of Human Resources; Alison Nichols, interim director of Elementary Curriculum; Donna Peregoff, assistant director of Human Resources – Core Human Resources; and Dr. Robin Thompson, executive director of Pupil Personnel Services.

Nikki and Joe Fulford named son Easton’s new baby sister, Palmer James.

Luz Corcuera is on the cover of this month’s West Coast Woman magazine. She is the respected executive director of UnidosNow, which empowers the region’s Hispanic/Latino community through education, integration and civic engagement.

• A bow to Carla Welke, who retired after 36 years with the Manatee County Clerk of Court & Comptroller office.

Linda Boone is 39. Again.

• So is Jennifer Young.

Sara Langenberg, too.

• Southeast High cheerleaders Yanira Dela Cruz, Layla Hines and Jada Price earned superior ratings and Universal Cheerleader Association All-America status at UCA camp in Miami.

• That’s 30 years of wedded bliss for Greg and Sarah Taber-Coker.

• And a salute to Blake Medical Center Security Officer Jimmy Pacelko, who was honored recently by hospital, county and city officials for helping defuse a dangerous situation in the emergency room waiting area. A visitor was spotted loading a firearm in her purse and Pacelko was ultimately able to secure the weapon safely while Bradenton Police, responding to the 911, arrested the individual.
