VIN'S PEOPLE: Leadership Manatee to honor longtime educator, advocate Barbara Harvey

A bow to longtime educator and children’s advocate Barbara Harvey, who will be honored Wednesday by the Leadership Manatee Alumni Association with its Distinguished Leadership Award at the 25th annual Kent C. Schulz Leadership Luncheon.

Beginning in 1961, Barbara worked in the school district for 43 years as a teacher and administrator, served on the school board 16 years and was honored with the opening of Barbara A. Harvey Elementary School in 2019.

The mother of six has been a beloved matriarch for generations of young people in Manatee County.

• Speaking of folks deserving recognition, elementary school cafeteria managers Joyce Blosser (Ballard), Billie Brinn (Williams) and Norma Lykins (Daughtrey) were honored by the school board during National School Lunch Week.

• Well done to Lakewood Ranch High’s girls and boys swim teams who swept the team titles at the 2022 Manatee County Swim championships, and big ups to those prep relay teams and individuals who also won titles during the event at G.T. Bray Park.

The relay winners were led by Bradenton Christian's Jack Freed, Riggs Klika, Kuyper Johnson and Jack Sallee in both the boys 200 medley and 400 freestyle; the LRHS girls quartet of Abby Loefgren, Zharra Conner, Payton Griffin and Nicole Majewski (200 medley); BCS girls Chloe Huth, Ellie Dalman, Teagan Stermer, Adrianna Galliano (200 free); LRHS boys Scott Barkey, Kai Byrd, Kyle Dorn and Jorge Guzman (200 free); and Braden River girls Maya Szymanski, Nora Benninghoff, Gaby Ramirez-Barrero and Sydney Koshinski (400 free).

Swimmers who won two events were Payton Griffin (LRHS) and Denis Jones (Southeast) in the 200 and 500 free; Abby Hite (SEHS) 100 free, 100 breaststroke; and Jorge Guzman (LRHS) 50 and 100 free.

And single event winners were Ruby Broadfoot (Manatee) 200 individual medley, Nick Sevarino (SEHS) 200 IM, Nicole Majewski (LRHS) 50 free, Teagan Stermer (BCS) 100 butterfly, Jacob Hall (MHS) 100 butterfly, Maya Szymanski (BRHS) 100 backstroke, Jack Freed (BCS) 100 backstroke, and Samuel Fraatz (Parrish) 100 breaststroke.

• Meals on Wheels PLUS holds its annual Stuff the Bus event next Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at all Publix locations. The goal is to raise 150,000 pounds of food to feed our county’s needy.
