Vintage shop VNP Gallery to relocate to downtown Corpus Christi

Downtown Corpus Christi is continuing to grow, with a vintage shop relocating to the area.

VNP Gallery, currently in Water Street Village, will mark a grand opening at its new, bigger space on Peoples Street on Saturday.

Jonathan "Jay" Winfrey, Emilio Trevino and Jimmy Canela are the owners of the store. Winfrey said the move is a necessity so the business can be closer to the downtown scene and be more involved with community events.

"VNP moving will bring a better variety of clothing to the area," Winfrey said. "Downtown doesn't have too many cool retail stores like us. We will be able to bring a chill vibe there."

The vintage shop's new place, at 427 Peoples St., will provide more curated pieces, Winfrey said.

"For the past five or six months, we've been stashing pieces away and saving them for the opening," Winfrey said. "It will have a better layout and be an overall better experience for people. We just want to show everyone we can supply really cool premium vintage, whether that be streetwear or sneakers."

When it comes to retail stores in downtown Corpus Christi, the options are slim. Other stores sell clothing, accessories or vintage knick-knacks, but not vintage wear.

"We'll be able to provide downtown with a cool retail store," Winfrey said. "Our store will have a better variety of clothing to choose from."

As for the original location, Winfrey said it will be closed for about a month and then renovated to become an outlet vintage store where everything will be $20 or less.

"There's so much clothes we find all the time, so I still wanted to keep the space," Winfrey said. "It will be a cool outlet where you can still find nice vintage pieces for a cheap price."

The opening is set to be a big "shebang" with door-buster deals and live music.

"We've been working really hard on this," Winfrey said. "It will be totally different from the store we have right now. We're ready to be part of Peoples Street."
