Taken by Oklahoma-based photographer Lora Scantling as part of her Little Heros photo project, the image depicts Rheann Franklin, Ainsley Peters and Rylie Hughey, three young girls who, at the time, were battling different types of cancer.

“My step dad was fighting cancer at the time, he had lung cancer,” Scantling told Today. “And I always wanted to create pictures that mean something.”

Moved by a series by Anne Geddes that depicted children with missing limbs, Scantling got to work on celebrating her own “little heroes."

“I thought, I need to do something that gives my viewers the same feeling.”

Months after taking the photo of the girls, Scantling was thrilled to learn that they were each in remission. Gathering them together once again, she had them pose for a new photo.

"We decided to do it holding the original picture this year so everyone could see how much they have changed!” Scantling told Today. “All three girls are doing great and are still cancer free/in remission."

Scantling feels lucky to have been able to document the girls recovery and has been amazed by how much the images have touched people.

"Still to this day we all get notifications and messages from people who have seen the story and portrait,” she said. “We have so many eager followers ready to see this new updated portrait!”
