Virginia Beach City Council is seeking applicants to fill the late Councilman Louis Jones’ seat

At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, a black sash hung over the chair where Councilman Louis Jones sat. A lit candle sat on his former desk and his nameplate still marked his place.

Jones, who served on the council for over 35 years, died suddenly on Saturday. He was 86. On Tuesday, council members reflected on his life and discussed plans to fill his seat with a placeholder who would serve until his term expires at the end of the year.

Any registered voter who lives in the Bayside area can apply for the seat. They need to submit a resume, a letter that includes an explanation of why they want to serve and what they know about the council’s priorities and a statement of economic interest.

The council doesn’t want to rush the process, and wants to make sure there’s public engagement, Mayor Bobby Dyer said.

Applications are due July 8. They will be reviewed in the closed session July 12 and the council will make a list of candidates who will be interviewed publicly at a special session Aug. 2. They will announce finalists and have public comment on Aug. 9 and vote then or Aug. 16.

“It’s very sad for all of us, but if we don’t do this, then we’re not doing our duty and I know Louis would not want us to be in that position,” Vice Mayor Rosemary Wilson said. “I know he wants us to do our duty because if we don’t do it, the court will appoint someone.”
