Virginia Beach City Council to vote on new $17 million election headquarters

VIRGINIA BEACH — The City Council on Tuesday will vote to purchase a building near Mount Trashmore that will serve as the city’s new election headquarters.

The building will cost $17 million, which includes the $14.25 million purchase price and $3 million for renovations.

Money will have to be shuffled around to pay for the new Office of Voter Registration and Elections Operations: about $3.2 million from the General Fund; $11.5 million from the General Fund debt service; and $2.6 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds.

An internal city review of district voting conducted last year found that current election-related facilities, spread out among several different buildings, are “inadequate for efficient operations” and would benefit from being in one large office.

The proposed building, at 500 Studio Drive, is in Lakeview Corporate Park near the intersection of Holland Road and S. Independence Boulevard.

It would be used for elections operations, training for election officials, ballot processing and secure storage for election technology and ballots.
