Virginia Beach mass shooting survivors, victims’ families to lead moment of silence

Survivors and families of the victims of the May 31 tragedy in Virginia Beach will lead a city-wide moment of silence at the Oceanfront on the shooting’s fourth anniversary.

According to an update from former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who is representing some of the victims’ families, Virginia Beach 5/31 Families United will host the moment of silence at the Neptune Statue on 31st Street. It begins at 4:06 p.m., which is when the first 911 call from the shooting at the municipal center came in.. The moment will conclude with the ringing of a bell, and the families of the 12 victims are welcomed to release a dove in honor of their loved one.

“We hope to build bridges for healing and recovery,” the release reads.

That night, a candlelight vigil will be held in-person at 8 p.m. in front of City Hall. The names of the victims will be read, with music provided by Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Speakers include representatives from local public safety and emergency services.

Flags will be flown at half-staff at all city buildings and properties from May 29 through sunset on May 31 in honor of Love for VB Day, which was the result of a proclamation issued by Mayor Bobby Dyer. May 31 is also recognized statewide as Virginia Beach Remembrance Day, which calls for flags to be lowered at all local, state and federal government buildings.

Virginia Beach has also been offering community events to commemorate the anniversary, including fitness classes at city recreation centers, mindfulness and resiliency programming though the public library system and mental health services from the Department of Human Services.
