Virginia Beach resident Marc Leishman finishes tied for fifth at the Masters

Marc Leishman fell short of winning his first major championship, but the Virginia Beach resident still managed a top-five finish at the Masters on Sunday.

Leishman, a native of Australia who now lives in Virginia Beach, started the final round four shots back and was tied for second with Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Will Zalatoris at 7-under-par.

Leishman and that trio couldn’t catch Hideki Matsuyama on Sunday. Matsuyama started the day at 11-under and became the first Japanese golfer to win a major, finishing at 10-under, one shot ahead of Zalatoris.

Jordan Spieth and Xander Schaffele finished tied for third at 7-under, followed by Jon Rahm and Leishman at 6-under.

Leishman, 37, has won five PGA Tour titles, and his best Masters finish was a fourth-place tie in 2013 – four shots off the lead.

Leishman shot 72-67-70 in the first three rounds this year at Augusta. On Sunday, he started his final round with a bogey, birdie and bogey. He added two more bogeys and two more birdies to finish at 73 for a tournament total of 6-under-par 282.

Leishman was seeking his first Tour victory of 2021. His season-best finish was a tie for fourth in January at the Sony Open in Hawaii. Before arriving at the Masters, Leishman had missed back-to-back cuts and finished tied for 28th in his previous three tournaments.
