Virginia Beach-themed Nike shoe design reaches 2nd round of Instagram contest after getting 35,000 likes

Kenny Jones’ Virginia Beach-themed Nike sneaker design advanced to the second round in a shoe contest he entered last week. He was among the top 10 contestants to receive the most Instagram likes for his entry.

Round 2 began Tuesday. This time, voting will take place on the host’s Instagram account.

The carousel post displays each design, along with the sneaker’s title commented below. The top three contestants with the most likes on their design’s comment will move to the final round.

Voting ended at 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Contestants had to design a pair of Nike SB sneakers representing a city of their choice. Jones chose the city where he was raised, Virginia Beach.

The 28-year-old Coast Guardsman lives in Chesapeake with his wife and 3-year-old son.

He dreamt about creating his own shoe for years, and jumped at the opportunity when he saw the contest.

“I’ve been shaking ever since this happened, like constantly all day,“ Jones said. “To see people in the community, people I don’t even know, wanting to wear my shoe.”

Jones’ design went viral two days after the posted it on social media. It received over 201,000 likes on Twitter and 35,000 on Instagram.

Jones said he hopes to open his own shoe store someday, and this contest could get him closer to that goal.
