Virginia Beach woman visits the Chrysler to enjoy an exhibition and receives a memory of a lifetime

Sue Pigg, of Virginia Beach, read an article in The Virginian-Pilot about an art exhibition at the Chrysler Museum of Art called “Home,” by Norfolk native Robert Davis. She tucked a copy of the newspaper in her bag and drove to downtown Norfolk. At the museum, she perused the drawings and pulled out the newspaper to take notes to share with a friend. She then heard someone say, “I see you came prepared.” She turned and saw a “nice guy smiling at me.” As they chatted, he explained that he was the artist. She couldn’t believe it, she wrote.

“My mouth fell open, but he could not see that due to my mask.”

She asked him to autograph the newspaper and he told her he could do better than that.

“Follow me,” he said.

Davis walked with her to the museum’s gift shop where he got a copy of a book that was written as a companion to the exhibition. He signed it and gave it to her.

She said she protested that it was too much, but he remarked that he appreciated her doing her homework and visiting the gallery.

“I thanked him profusely but felt inadequate about it,” Pigg wrote. “It will always remain a cherished memory.”

“Home” is on view through July 3.
