North Carolina basketball faced a shorthanded Virginia team on Thursday at the ACC Tournament.

Ahead of the quarterfinal matchup, Virginia announced Ben Vander Plas – one of the Cavaliers’ usual starters – would miss the remainder of the season with a fractured right hand. One of Virginia’s top players in the frontcourt, the 6-foot-8 forward suffered the injury Wednesday at practice.

Vander Plas was averaging 7.4 points and 4.6 rebounds and had started the last 14 games for the Hoos. He had 17 points and eight rebounds in Virginia’s 65-58 win against UNC in January.

With Vander Plas sidelined, Virginia inserted 7-foot-1 center Francisco Caffaro into the starting lineup to match up with UNC’s Armando Bacot.
