Daily VA Coronavirus Numbers Increase; Northam, Wife Isolate

VIRGINIA — There are 941 new cases of the coronavirus in Virginia as of Friday, according to the Virginia Department of Health, up from the 902 new cases reported on Thursday. The Department of Health also reported 23 additional coronavirus-related deaths on Friday.

The cumulative total number of cases in Virginia is 144,433 and the cumulative total number of coronavirus-related deaths across the state is 3,3136. Hospitalizations have increased to 10,806, up from 10,769 reported on Thursday.

On Friday morning, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam and his wife, Pamela Northam, announced they have tested positive for the coronavirus after a member of the governor's residence staff also tested positive. While the governor has reported experiencing no symptoms of COVID-19 — the disease caused by the virus — Pamela Northam has reported experiencing mild symptoms.

Northam and his wife received PCR nasal swab tests Wednesday and received positive results. Both will isolate for the next 10 days following guidelines from the Virginia Department of Health.

Wednesday's figure of 580 new cases was the lowest statewide total since 354 cases were reported on July 6. As of Friday, the seven-day average of cases is 819. The number of new cases reported per 100,000 people is 11, and the seven-day average of new daily cases reported per 100,000 people is 9.6.

With a 5.1 percent positive average of PCR tests statewide as of Friday, Virginia is approaching the 5 percent rate recommended by the World Health Organization for governments to allow further reopening. There have been 1,973,499 PCR tests completed in Virginia. At the peak of the pandemic, the percent positive figure in Virginia was more than 20 percent.

Four new outbreaks were reported on Friday, lifting the total number of outbreaks in Virginia to 1,004. A majority of the outbreaks are in long-term care facilities. There have been 22,528 coronavirus cases associated with these outbreaks across the state.

The breakdown of outbreaks across the state is as follows:

  • Long term care facilities: 423 outbreaks

  • Congregate settings: 358 outbreaks

  • Healthcare settings: 68

  • Correctional facilities: 67

  • Child care: 39

  • College/university: 23

  • K-12: 26

There have been 17,185 total COVID-19 patients discharged from Virginia hospitals to date, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

As of Friday, current hospitalizations include 117 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 221 in the intensive care units.

Ventilator use is at 21 percent among all hospital patients, and ICU occupancy is at 72 percent. Virginia's 2019 average for ICU occupancy was 67 percent. No hospitals are reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours.

  • Alexandria: 3,780 cases, 318 hospitalizations, 69 deaths; increase of 19 cases and one hospitalization

  • Arlington County: 3,909 cases, 498 hospitalizations, 148 deaths; increase of 20 cases

  • Fairfax County: 20,627 cases, 2,155 hospitalizations, 586 deaths; increase of 123 cases, decrease of nine hospitalizations and increase of three deaths

  • Fairfax City: 135 cases, 14 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of one hospitalization and one death

  • Falls Church: 70 cases, 13 hospitalizations, six deaths; no changes

  • Loudoun County: 6,774 cases, 428 hospitalizations, 124 deaths; increase of 27 cases

  • Manassas: 1,918 cases, 128 hospitalizations, 25 deaths; increase of eight cases

  • Manassas Park: 610 cases, 54 hospitalizations, eight deaths; increase of three cases and one death

  • Prince William County: 12,318 cases, 902 hospitalizations, 202 deaths; increase of 68 cases and two hospitalizations

  • Fredericksburg: 533 cases, 49 hospitalizations, five deaths; no changes

  • Spotsylvania County: 2,121 cases, 132 hospitalizations, 44 deaths; increase of 2 cases

  • Stafford County: 1,998 cases, 157 hospitalizations, 17 deaths; increase of 14 cases
