Watch: Virginia Democrats, abortion rights leaders to hold news conference on Supreme Court ruling

Virginian Democratic leaders will hold a news conference Friday afternoon in Richmond in reaction to the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The press conference will be live streamed from the Bell Tower in Capitol Square in Richmond via Facebook at 1 p.m.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Friday to overturn Roe V. Wade, ending constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place for half a century. Abortion remains legal in Virginia, but the decision is expected to lead to abortion bans and restrictions in roughly half the states.

Speakers at the event will include Del. Don Scott of Portsmouth, who was elected as the House’s new minority leader; Jamie Lockhart, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Action of Virginia; Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, and others.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who has pushed for pro-life legislation, released a statement Friday after the ruling, promising to introduce new legislation when the General Assembly returns in January.

“We can build a bipartisan consensus on protecting the life of unborn children, especially when they begin to feel pain in the womb and importantly supporting mothers and families who choose life,” Youngkin said in the statement.
