Virginia Driver Tells of Overnight 'Ordeal' as Hundreds Stuck for Hours on Snowy Interstate

Hundreds of drivers were stranded on Interstate 95 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, for hours into January 4 after severe weather left the highway blocked by "disabled vehicles and downed trees”, the Virginia Department of Transportation said.

VDOT reported a number of “major incidents” involving “disabled or crashed tractor-trailers” on January 3, and said early the following day crews were working “to remove stopped trucks, treat for icing, and plow snow.”

Susan Phalen was among those stranded overnight, and she documented the ordeal with videos posted to Twitter. “I’m 11 hours in to this ordeal,” she said, after 7 am.

She said shortly after 8 am that she was still in same spot. “People need medicine, water, food, and toilets. I worry for the elderly out here,” she tweeted. Credit: Susan Phalen via Storyful
