Virginia Remains Steady; Arlington, Richmond Report No New Deaths

VIRGINIA — Virginia health officials reported 638 new cases of the coronavirus Tuesday compared to Monday's numbers. The state's cumulative coronavirus cases are up to 66,740, while hospitalizations of people with the coronavirus have reached 6,512, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Twenty-eight new deaths were reported Tuesday, lifting the total number of people who have died in Virginia from COVID-19 to 1,881. Outbreaks at long-term care facilities now total 256, with 7,107 positive cases of the coronavirus at these facilities. At the state's long-term care facilities, 1,146 people have died from COVID-19.

Hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients numbered 902 Tuesday, up from the 783 reported hospitalized Tuesday, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. As of Tuesday, 8,913 coronavirus patients have been discharged from Virginia hospitals.

Patients on ventilators and in intensive care units increased on Tuesday. There are now 105 COVID-19 patients on ventilators, up from 86 reported Monday. Patients in the intensive care unit totaled 221 on Tuesday, up from 194 on Monday. Among all hospital patients, 638 of 3,004 ventilators are being used, representing 21-percent use statewide.

The statewide 7-day moving average of positive tests was at 6.0 percent as of July 3 — the most recent date that VDH has provided data — down from 6.1 percent on July 2 but up from a low of 5.8 percent on June 23. The percent remains significantly lower than the 20-percent positive rates seen in late April.

Statewide testing has been increasing or steady. The 16,387 tests reported on June 30 represented the highest daily increase in Virginia to date. As of Tuesday, 725,327 nasal swab tests have been completed in Virginia, an increase of 12,977 from Monday.

There have been no new deaths reported in the Arlington Health District since June 26, when five deaths were reported. This means there have been no COVID-19-related deaths reported in the health district for 10 days. In the city of Richmond, there have been no new COVID-19 deaths in more two weeks. The city of Fredericksburg still has not reported a death from the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

According to data from the Virginia Department of Health, Latinos make up 44 percent of Virginia’s coronavirus cases in which the department has been able to collect race and ethnicity data. As of now, Latino residents make up 22,477 of the cases across all health districts in the state.

Residents classified as white accounted for 14,307, or 28 percent, of cases with demographic data, as of Tuesday, and Black residents accounted for 9,741, or 19 percent, of cases. Latino residents make up about 10 percent of Virginia's population. Black residents make up about 20 percent.

In June, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said the state would be focusing its outreach and testing efforts on Latino communities across Virginia.
