Virginia school board chooses not to adopt state’s policies for transgender and nonbinary students

A Virginia school board chose not to adopt updated policies regarding the treatment of transgender and nonbinary students on Monday.

The Chesapeake School Board did not vote on the proposed policies, and only one board member moved to consider them. Her motion failed to receive a second.

"The school board has received input from many citizens this evening, and we have had the opportunity to discuss among ourselves," Chairwoman Victoria Proffitt read from a statement. "We have determined we will not take any action on the proposed transgender policies at this time. Which means it is not in effect."

The proposed changes would have aligned Chesapeake Public Schools with the Virginia Department of Education's policies, designed to acknowledge transgender and nonbinary students.

The policies allow those students to use the restrooms and other facilities of their chosen gender identity and to play gender-specific sports on the team that aligns with their preferred gender.

State law requires that local school boards adopt policies that are harmonious with the Virginia Department of Education's standards no later than the 2021-2022 school year, but doing so has received pushback from parents and religious communities.

"When my children are at school, they are students and not the school's children. My parental authority doesn't end in the parking lot," one mother told the board.
