Virginia slips past UConn

Feb. 22—CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Kyler Fedko had two of four hits for the University of Connecticut baseball team Sunday afternoon in a 4-2 loss to No. 5 nationally- ranked Virginia.

Chris Brown doubled for the Huskies ( 1- 2). Jimmy Wang took the loss on the mound after allowing three hits and two earned runs over 1.2 innings. Austin Peterson struck out two in relief while allowing one run.

After dropping the opening game of the 3- game series, 2- 1, on Friday, UConn bounced back with a 10- 9 victory over Virginia on Saturday afternoon.

Christian Fedko had four hits, including a 2- out RBI single in the top of the eighth inning that broke a 7- all tie. Ciaran Devaeny drew a bases- loaded walk later in the inning for a 9- 7 lead.

Virginia had tied the game at 7- all with a 4- run seventh.

Caleb Wurster picked up the win on the mound in relief after throwing 2.2 innings with four strikeouts.

Hollis Wivell scored twice with an RBI while Reese Guevarra had three hits, including an RBI triple for the Huskies (3-2) WOMEN'S SOCCER Huskies blank URI Kess Elmore and Lucy Cappadona scored goals as UConn kicked off its season Sunday with a 2-0 victory over the University of Rhode Island in its first game at Morrone Stadium since Oct. 21, 2018.

" Prior to the game we talked to the team and said ' it's been a year and three months since we played a game but it's been two years and three months since we played a game on campus'," UConn head coach Margaret Rodriguez said.

" We knew that we were confident and well prepared so we needed to make sure that we executed what we have been doing. And the team did just that."

Elmore opened the scoring 4: 17 into the game and Cappadona added insurance at the 31: 13 mark of the second.

UConn played all of its home games in 2019 at Dillon Stadium in Hartford while the new on- campus site was under construction.

The Huskies host Northeastern on Sunday at noon.
