Virginia Tech adds opioid overdose reversal kits to dorm halls

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — As the fight against opioids continues in the Commonwealth, one college is introducing a new initiative to expand its opioid response reach.

Virginia Tech has recently completed the installation of ONEbox kits, adding them to all residence halls. Each kit contains naloxone, the temporary opioid reversal spray also known by the brand as Narcan. The spray acts as an intervention in case of an opioid overdose.

The program came to life through the Hokie Wellness REVIVE! program. The initiative provides training to students on how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose emergency using naloxone. The program also hosts free Narcan training to teach students how to administer the drug.

The kits can be found next to the AED and Stop the Bleed kits in dorm halls. Each box contains two doses of naloxone, a face shield, gloves, and wipes. When the ONEbox Kit opens, a video will automatically start playing, showing a step-by-step for the intervention process. People can also scan a QR code inside to open an emergency response video on their phones.

Hokie Wellness is working with Recreation Sports to have the kits added to fitness spaces and is exploring ways to expand the program.

For students struggling with substance use or misuse, Hokie Wellness offers resources and support. This includes free individual consultations for students, recovery peer support groups, and a range of mental health resources through the Counseling Center.
