Virginia Tech sets new record high with over 52k first-year applications

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia Tech (VT) is continuing to blaze its trail to growth. On Feb. 2, the college announced that it set a new record high for first-year applications for fall 2024.

According to VT, they had 52,365 first-year applications submitted. This is over an 11% increase from last year and the fourth straight year that the university has set a new high for first-year applications.

“This once again affirms that the university’s growing global reputation makes it a top destination for students,” said Juan Espinoza, interim vice provost for enrollment management. “Our recruiters continue to find ways to connect students to the university with a strong focus on the access and affordability highlighted in the university’s Virginia Tech Advantage initiative.”

VT says this sea of applications was academically strong with an average high school GPA of 4.07. This includes 8,059 first-generation college students, 20,610 in-state applications, 26,696 out-of-state applications, and 5,059 international applicants.

Since 2018, first-year applications have increased over 50%. This came after VT changed its admission process to include the development of a more holistic review process. In 2020, the college was added to the Common Application.

The university also began collecting self-reported academic information and streamlined the fee waiver application process.

Even with submission on the rise, school officials have their eyes on the target for next year with a total enrollment goal slightly above 31,000 undergraduate students.

Future students who were accepted to Virginia Tech have until May 1 to submit their decision. Students who want to transfer to the college for the summer or fall session will have until March 1 to apply.
