Basketball, indoor track and swimming and diving will hold state championships during the winter season, the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association announced Monday.

The private school state championships will be limited to the moderate-risk sports, leaving wrestling without a postseason unless the National Federation of State High School Associations changes its high-risk designation.

The VISAA executive committee unanimously approved the recommendations given by its Winter Sports Competition Committee, according to a release.

The VISAA basketball state tournaments will be held Feb. 23-27, indoor track’s championship will be Feb. 20, and the swimming and diving championships will be Feb. 19-20.

Postseason qualifications this season won’t be based on rankings, however, as the VISAA will extend “open invitations to member schools."

Sport-specific safety protocols will be released on Nov. 6 and guidelines for postseason participation, determined by the Winter Sports Competition Committee and individual sports committees, will be released Dec. 1, according to the VISAA.

The VISAA did not sanction state championships for fall sports and canceled those on July 24 while allowing member schools to make their own decisions for regular-season competition.

Portsmouth Christian and Atlantic Shores are playing a shortened football schedule this fall, with Portsmouth Christian playing the area’s first high school game in September since the Virginia High School League ended the state basketball tournament March 12.

The two schools played each other on Oct. 17, when Portsmouth Christian won 49-38.
