VISAA state track: Cape Henry girls tie for state title; Norfolk Academy girls 3rd, boys fourth
Cape Henry junior Elena Granados won the 200 meters, long jump and triple jump to lead the Dolphins to a share of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II girls state title at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
The Dolphins tied with Broadwater Academy. Atlantic Shores was fourth.
Granados ran 25.95 seconds to win the 200. She jumped 16 feet, 11¼ inches, to win the long jump and 36-8½ to win the triple jump. She also finished runner-up in the 100 meters in a personal-best 12.74 and placed fifth in the shot put.
Granados teamed with Kaylah Walker, Saniya Rhem and Marshall Daniel to help the Dolphins win the 4x100 relay.
Norfolk Christian freshman Jizelle Holland also had a big day. She won the 100 meters (12.42) and 400 (58.19) and placed second in the triple jump.
Atlantic Shores sophomore Tiara Jenkins swept the hurdles. She won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.68 and the 300 hurdles in 45.99.
Nansemond-Suffolk senior Becca Howe won the discus (95 feet).
North Cross won the boys title. Atlantic Shores was fourth.
The Seahawks were led by throwers Patrick Linton and Matthew Duenke, who finished first and second, respectively, in the shot put. Linton won at 42-5½. Linton also placed sixth in the discus and Duenke was seventh.
The Seahawks got help from Josiah Malone and Wesley Brewley, who finished second and third, respectively, in the 110 hurdles. Malone also placed runner-up in the 300 hurdles and Brewley was fourth. Brewley also finished runner-up in the triple jump.
Norfolk Christian senior Chris Joseph won the long jump at 21-9½.
VISAA Division I
Norfolk Academy’s girls placed third and its boys were fourth at the VISAA Division I state meet. The Potomac School won the girls title and Woodberry Forest won the boys title.
Norfolk Academy was led by eighth-grader Taylor Kulow, who won the high jump and was third in both the 100 hurdles and triple jump.
Seniors Sydney Vest and Madison Galler also contributed. Vest was second in the discus, fifth in the high jump and eighth in the pole vault. Galler was fourth in the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and discus.
The Bulldogs’ relay of Galler, Josie Saffold, Nora Clingenpeel and Angelina Lancey finished runner-up in the 4x400.
Catholic senior Natalie Hubbard won the pole vault (clearing 9-6) and placed eighth in the long jump.
Norfolk Academy’s boys were led by Liam Sullivan, who finished runner-up in the 1,600 and third in the 3,200. Dylan Defoor finished third in the 200. He also teamed with Ryan Guzik, Zahir Griffith and Davis Ottinger to help the Bulldogs win the 4x400 relay.
