Visalia Unified schools and the district office are currently without internet after an outage struck early Tuesday morning.

“We are having an issue with our service provider,” Visalia Unified School District spokesman Andre Pecina said. “We are actively working on getting it up and running.”

Visalia Unified serves around 29,000 students and employs over 1,000 teachers and classified staff. For now, educators will go back to using traditional methods.

“In the meantime, teachers and students are learning how we all did,” Pecina continued, “through books and low-tech means.”

Pencina didn't say which service provider the district has. AT&T and Xfinity reported no outages for households. The cause looks to be theft, though, Pecina said.

"Apparently, there was an attempted theft of fiber optic cabling not on school/district grounds but affected us,” he said.

No timeline was given as to when students and teachers will be back up and running.

Tulare City schools are also having issues with their phone lines following Tuesday morning's outage.

"We are working with AT&T to resolve the issue," a statement from the Tulare City School District reads. "If you need to communicate with the school site you will need to go to the front office until further notice."

There's no talk of sending students home because of the outage, however, some phone services, announcements, emails and attendance programs will be delayed because of the outage.
