Visit to Berks museum brings back haunting memories for World War II vet

Apr. 9—State Rep. Mark M. Gillen took area World War II veteran Richard DeVerter on a tour of the Berks Military History Museum in Mohnton, the Robeson Township lawmaker announced over the weekend.

Gillen said that while in the museum's Holocaust Room, the 97-year-old DeVerter recounted the grief he experienced in 1945 at the sight of just liberated inmates still in Germany's Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

He served in Gen. George S. Patton's Third Army as a crew member on a half-track in the 8th Armored Division.

DeVerter lives with his wife, Marie, in Lancaster.
