Jefferson Street Farmers Market opens for the season. The market offers local produce, baked goods, canned goods, plants, regional crafts and live entertainment every Thursday, May through October, from 4:30-7 p.m. in downtown Burlington. Watch for special events each month.

Main Street Mount Pleasant Cinco de Mayo Downtown Party is 5 p.m. at Union Block, 111 W. Monroe St.

Moose Lodge 579, 2529 Mount Pleasant St., will host Bingo, early bird at 6:30 p.m., regular games at 7 p.m. Yolanda’s food will be available with carryout too.

Mount Pleasant Main Street Art Center, 106 S. Main St., for the May exhibit, “Monumental Impressions” by Jane Elizabeth Shank, is 5-7 p.m. This exhibit will be in the gallery for the entire month.

St. Alphonsus Ladies of Charity rummage sale is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday-Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, in Manning Hall on South Jackson Street in Mount Pleasant. Everything is 50 cents unless marked otherwise.

Steamboat Senior Center, 501 Jefferson St., will host the House Band with three vocalists, guitars, bass and drums, playing country rock, waltzes, from 1-3 p.m. Cover charge is $2.

Art Center of Burlington, 301 Jefferson St., First Friday with Jefferson Connection is 6 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge.

Burlington High School student group Mind Blowing Connections will lead a Walk to Fight Suicide from 1:30-4 p.m. The walk will begin at Bracewell Stadium, 919 Market St., and proceed to the Port of Burlington, where organizations will have booths set up to provide information. New London PTO annual Carnival is 5-8 p.m. in the New London High School gym. Cost is $5 for individual, $10 for a family. The carnival will have bounce houses, food trucks, football toss, popcorn and more.

Battle of the Brushes is 4:30-9 p.m. at Art Center of Burlington, 301 Jefferson St. Watch live as five accomplished artists vie to paint the winning picture, which you’ll have a chance to win. Tickets are $15 in advance and seats are limited. Stop in at the art center to reserve a spot.

Des Moines County Master Gardener Plant Sale is 8 a.m. to noon at Des Moines County Extension Office, 1700 W. Mount Pleasant St., with vegetable starts, perennials, annuals, houseplants and advice for gardeners.

Fundraiser for the WACO foreign exchange student and Ukraine is 5-7 p.m.at the WACO High School in Wayland. For a freewill donation enjoy varenyky, sausage, borscht, cole slaw, hash browns and fruit.

Heritage Trust Preservation Station, 213 Valley St., is open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, with unique decor and historic building materials for sale.
