Visitors Rush to Climb Uluru Before Ban Takes Force
A long line of climbers crowded the path to the top of Uluru on October 24, two days before a ban on climbing the rock was to take force.
The Anangu traditional owners of Uluru, a popular tourist attraction in the centre of Australia, have requested that people not scale the monolith because of its spiritual significance.
In November 2017, the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park board unanimously voted to ban climbing on the rock.
“If I travel to another country and there is a sacred site, an area of restricted access, I don’t enter or climb it, I respect it. It is the same here for Anangu. We welcome tourists here. We are not stopping tourism, just this activity," board chairman Sammy Wilson said at the time.
