VITA of Crawford County offers free tax assistance

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Program offers free tax preparation and e-filing of federal, state and Ohio School District income tax returns. Assistance with Bucyrus City income tax returns is available as well.

To qualify for the service, a person's income must be low to moderate (about $60,000 or less) and the return cannot include issues VITA volunteers are not allowed to handle.

VITA volunteers will offer services in the old Maplecrest Building, 717 Rogers St., Bucyrus. There are limited parking places, but there is street parking on both sides of Rogers Street.

The Bucyrus VITA site will prepare tax returns throughout the tax season 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with plans to be open Feb. 5-April 13 by appointment only. Beginning the last week of January residents can schedule an appointment by calling the Crawford County Council on Aging at 419-562-3050 or 800-589-7853.

In order for VITA to do the return, clients must take all income documents (i.e. W-2, W-2G, 1099’s, SSA-1099, 1095-A, etc.) for 2023 and any information documents (i.e. estimated tax payments, totaled medical expenses, etc.) they may have for 2023 along with the prior year return. Some 1099s are not mailed out until Feb. 15.

Due to COVID, VITA requests people wear a mask to the appointment if they have had recent contact with anyone with COVID. Also, anyone who is sick or running a temperature is asked to call and reschedule.
