Viterbo and Western Tech partner for new accounting degree program

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – A new program between La Crosse area colleges is helping students across the state, with an interest in accounting. First News at Nine’s Dashal Mentzel has the details.

Viterbo University and the Wisconsin Technical College System have announced a new articulation agreement that allows students who have earned an associate degree in accounting to transfer up to 90 credits to the fully online Viterbo University Accounting Degree Completion Program and earn a bachelor’s degree in as little as one year. Viterbo Director of Transfer and Adult Admissions, Ryan Thibodeau, says, “We’ve really concentrated the last few years on our fully online degree offerings. So that’s where this one was, the newest one in accounting that we put together to allow for students across the state to complete an associate of applied science degree in accounting to transfer up to 90 credits.”

Thibodeau says this program will help online accounting students across the state, “We’ve got a fair amount of students who transfer each year into accounting. We have a traditional daytime program, so students certainly could come over and choose to do our program in person. We just feel like we can touch more places if we offer this agreement fully online to help with students all across the state.”

Thibodeau adds that programs like this help the university reach out to students in a wider area, “This has truly allowed us to reach more schools across the state and we continue to build those relationships and partnerships. We have good cohorts coming from Janesville, from Waukesha, from Green Bay and a variety of different majors.”

While Viterbo has done programs like this for bachelor’s degrees before, the one for accounting will be different. Thibodeau explains, “Most only accept the associate degree itself, which is about 60 credits. Whereas this agreement allows them to do more if they want to and do fewer classes through.”

Thibodeau says things like this can help make Viterbo a little more known across the state. In La Crosse, Dashal Mentzel, First News at Nine.

Thibodeau says when the next program like this comes around, it will be health care related on the business side.
