More than 100 years ago, George Santayana wrote: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
However, baseball fans were happy to see history repeat itself Monday night in Seattle.
Toronto Blues Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. won the 2023 MLB Home Run Derby at T-Mobile Park, 16 years after his father won the competition in San Francisco.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Guerrero Jr. only took part in this year’s Derby at his family’s request.
“When my family pushes me to do something,” he told Passan, “usually good things happen.”
Guerrero Jr. defeated Tampa Bay Rays star Randy Arozarena 25-23 in the final round, and then received the same trophy his father did in 2007.

It was a cool moment for baseball fans to witness, and Guerrero Sr. clearly was touched. He took a moment to write a note to his son that was shared on Twitter.
“What a performance! Proud of you son #HRDerby,” Guerrero Sr. wrote.
