Vogue Worcester strikes a pose with HBO Max 'Legendary' reality star and Mass. native London Fleur De Lis
WORCESTER — Vogue Worcester returned to the Worcester PopUp! at the Jean McDonough Arts Center on Franklin Street recently.
Dancers of various skill levels participated in a workshop instructed by HBO Max's "Legendary" season one contestant from the House of Escada, London Fleur De Lis, who covered everything from the five elements of vogue — catwalk, hands, spins and dips, duckwalks, and floor performance — to a choreographed routine.
De Lis, a native of Springfield, failed to break stride as he swapped a pair of sneakers for thigh-high, high-heeled boots to impart his vogueing wisdom to an eager and rapt class in a just barely large enough space at the JMAC.
Some of the students picked up the moves right away, while others fell a couple of times — especially during the more challenging duckwalk — before getting the hang of things, but the common result was that most had fun.
Vogue or vogueing, got its start within the Black and Latino LGBT ballroom community of New York City, where dancers would mimic the hand gestures and movements of the famous fashion magazine's runway models.
It reached the pinnacle of its popularity after Madonna's 1990 hit song "Vogue" and is currently experiencing a resurgence in popularity due in part to the FX series "Pose" and an increasing acceptance of gay culture.
"Legendary" is a vogueing reality competition show that premiered on HBO Max in May 2020. The program showcases the competition between eight houses from the world of ballroom.
Queer The Scene cultivated the relationship with London, fundraised, and organized the workshop series.
