Voice of the people: Another step toward the end of democracy

Another step toward the end of democracy

My wife and I are unavoidably away for the election. First time in more than 50 years. More than six weeks ago, we applied for absentee ballots. As of today, no ballots have arrived. This is the last week or it will not arrive back in time. I am fearful we will not be able to vote in time to be counted.

Governments have always worked to make voting easier than more difficult. Faked up issues, like rampant voter fraud, stolen ballots, or just plain political maneuvering turns the United States a little more toward a banana republic.

Given the impacts of Ian, the post office maybe part of the problem. It takes almost a month to have mail forwarded from Lake Wales. Why not extend the deadline for counting absentee ballots?

Gov. Ron DeSantis is probably going to win. Another step toward the end of the American experiment in democracy that began more than two centuries ago. Our model now seems to be autocratic leaders, compulsive liars, or mimicking “genius leaders” like Vladimir Putin. If the ruling party finds it hurt their efforts more than the opposition, we will see the quickest legislative turn around in history.

We are better than this.

Rubio and cohorts trying to play God

Marco Rubio, the bright and shining star of the Republican Party who quit politics after his first term in a moment of conscience and then returned because he could not do anything else would like to micro-manage women' lives.

His policies on health services for women would have caused my death in 1963 when I had an ectopic pregnancy in Leesburg, Florida. My infant son would have been left an orphan, there would be no Robb, Doug, Theresa. My daughter almost becomes hysterical if we talk about the possibility that she may not have existed if the current trend was the law in 1963. We both are glad that God was able to play God and not Marco Rubio and cohorts.

Vote to stop the erosion of our democracy

If you are voting for Republican candidates, you are enabling the erosion of our democracy. If you are a Democrat, and you are not going to vote in this election cycle, you are enabling the erosion of our democracy.

With almost 300 election deniers running for public office and squads of their supporters are occupying voting places with the intent of intimidating citizens as they place their mail-in documents in drop boxes. Without fair and free elections, our country could become something far less than a democracy.

Your vote for the party that is trying to support and preserve our democratic republic is the right thing to do at this tipping point. A tipping point that could forever alter the form of government that so many have died defending. This is a very critical decision that all of us have to make. Please make it wisely for your children's and their children sake.
