The Voice recap: Bye, bye blinds

And just like that, we have our full slate of contestants lined up for The Voice season 16 (at least until Bebe Rexha crowns her Comeback Stage winner later on for the lives)! Coaches Adam Levine, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Blake Shelton all come into the evening with few spots left, and some of them are a bit more discerning than others while filling them out. Somehow, Kelly ends up being the last coach with an open spot, and it turns out to be a blessing in disguise as she finally nabs that male country singer she’s been hoping for.

Before we move onto the battles — and welcome new team advisers Charlie Puth (Team Adam), Kelsea Ballerini (Team Kelly), Khalid (John Legend), and Brooks & Dunn (Blake Shelton) — here’s a look at who made it through on this week’s final round of blind auditions.

Celia Babini (17 – New York, N.Y.)
What to know: She’s wanted to be a musician since she was three and grew up with a very different set of artists as parents — one’s a world-traveling photographer and the other’s a successful fashion designer. She doesn’t expect her father to make it to see her sing tonight, but he surprises her by showing up at the audition.
The performance: Her smoky, steady rendition of Billie Eilish’s “​idontwannabeyouanymore” gets all four coaches’ attention. John Legend says he heard bits of Adele in the intro and some Florence + the Machine/Fiona Apple belting in the end, and everyone believes they’ve got to stuff to groom her talents. Ultimately, it’s Adam’s promise that she can not only win the show but also own a musical lane that’s far too empty right now — not to mention, her childhood obsession with Maroon 5 — that wins her over to his team.

Cecily Hennigan (16 – Conway, S.C.)
What to know: This teen went viral for singing her order at a McDonald’s drive-through and has a prestigious spot at her state’s school for the arts.
The performance: Her performance of Jewel’s “Foolish Games” is captivating as she builds from a cautious (albeit competent) pop rendition into something much more haunting and elegant. Blake Shelton is beside himself after he turns and hears her cascade through one note reach after the next, while his fellow coaches sit out the opportunity to recruit her. Between her pitch and obvious training, he thinks she can go far in this show.

Kalvin Jarvis (29 – Tucson, Ariz.)
What to know: He slings Snoop lyrics about pancakes, so music’s pretty much always on his mind. It’s his means of coping with a tough childhood and the fact that he works full-time with his mother at an all-day breakfast establishment.
The performance: It’s pretty brave to perform a coach’s own song in front of them, but Kalvin isn’t afraid to take on John Legend’s “A Good Night” during his blind audition, and it pays off. His smooth runs and easy scales impress Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson, and while John Legend doesn’t turn, he still enjoys the set from his seat. Adam admits that John might be the best coach for Kalvin, for obvious reasons, but maintains that he’s the second-best choice.

David Owens (24 – Indianapolis, Ind.)
What to know: He grew up in a big family and started singing in church. He’s never pursued it professionally for fear that he wouldn’t be able to provide for his family, especially now that he’s got a tiny baby boy to care for.
The performance: His gravelly, soulful rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” is warm and rich with detail, and Kelly Clarkson can’t believe her luck that she’s the only chair turn of this audition.

Presley Tennant (16 – Norco, Calif.)
What to know: She’s an outdoorsy type — ATV riding is her happy place — but she has a history of performing with a pre-teen girl group as well.
The performance: It takes a couple of lines for her delivery of Demi Lovato’s “Stone Cold” to find a groove, but Kelly Clarkson hears enough of her pop ballad to offer her a spot. Kelly dances along as Ashley flexes her range and vocal strength, and once again, the coach is left amazed that she’s the only one who’s turned for her.

Rod Stokes (30 – Grand Bay, Ala.)
What to know: People assume he’s country through and through based on his bulldozing and other woodsy activities, but he considers his aesthetic more gospel and even calls himself the “male Kelly Clarkson.”
The performance: Rod’s scratchy take on the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody” starts out on an inviting note that grabs Adam Levine’s attention at the outset. John Legend and Blake Shelton turn, too, after hearing a few notes with both gravel and precision. Adam and John compliment his unique voice, but Blake’s offer for Rod to complete his team ultimately wins the day.

Andrew Jannakos (Flower Bridge, Ga.)
What to know: He looks more like a hipster than a southern country singer, which is why he likes the idea of this show.
The performance: Now that Blake’s team is full, Adam and Kelly are each ready to fight for this country singer after hearing a few lines of his deep and resonant tones. Andrew’s performance of Luke Combs’ “Beautiful Crazy” is slow and familiar, and Kelly Clarkson is especially on board for the guy. Blake Shelton, who can’t turn for him, even throws his weight behind Team Kelly, but Andrew seems to appreciate Adam’s offer to have him as the lone country singer on his squad, which is now full.

Kayslin Victoria (16 – Claremont, Fla.)
What to know: She spends her downtime helping rehab sick horses on her family’s farm.
The performance: Both Kelly Clarkson and John Legend turn for her bustling pop take on Portugal. The Man’s “Feel It Still.” It’s energetic, fun, and filled with little surprises, and Kelly’s especially impressed with her confidence. John’s excitement over offering her the final spot on his team ultimately wins her over, though.

Jackson Marlow (18 – Rogersville, Ala.)
What to know: He works for the local municipal department and has a familiar uncle: season 13’s Red Marlow.
The performance: After hearing a bunch of Voice hopefuls come and go, Kelly Clarkson finally fills her final spot with the male country singer she’s been looking for all along. His voice has some unintentional quiver and a few breathy spots, but there’s still a lot of heart and drawl to be heard throughout, so we’ll see what she can do with his downhome tones.
