  • Volkswagen has chosen out a name for its new electric vehicle, a hatchback that will be called the ID.3.

  • The ID.3 will not be sold in the U.S., but it kicks off a new family of electric models, all of which will wear the ID name paired with a number.

  • The first ID to reach the U.S. market will be an electric compact crossover similar to the I.D. Crozz concept, set to arrive in 2020.

Volkswagen is busy fleshing out its plans to launch a whole new range of electric cars, and things are officially kicking off with the compact hatchback you see here. Though it's still fitted with camouflage, as it won't officially debut until the Frankfurt auto show this fall, we now know that this first model will be called the ID.3. This same naming structure will apply to the successive Volkswagen EVs that the company plans to launch globally over the next few years.

Although the ID.3 will not be sold in the U.S., we will get subsequent ID models. The first model for the U.S. market will be a compact crossover similar in shape to the I.D. Crozz concept. It will go on sale in America in 2020; while its name hasn't been confirmed yet, we would guess something like ID.4 or ID.5. The only other ID model confirmed for the U.S. thus far is the Microbus-inspired van that was called the I.D. Buzz in concept form. That retro-inspired model is set to arrive in 2022.

Although the ID.3 won't be sold here, some of the information that Volkswagen is sharing about its European launch may apply to future U.S.-bound IDs. It will offer three battery options, with the lowest providing an estimated 205 miles of range, the middle offering 261 miles of range, and the top option offering 342 miles of range-all on the WLTP testing cycle, which differs from the EPA's range calculations.

A pre-ordering program is now open for the first 30,000 units of the ID.3, all of which will be part of a special-edition run called the ID.3 1ST. A €1000 deposit reserves one of these models, which will begin production in late 2019, with deliveries starting in early 2020. Volkswagen says the ID.3's starting price will sit below €30,000, and the launch-edition car, which has the middle battery-pack option, starts at just under €40,000.
